#06 - WORKSITE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: A 3-MONTHS INTERVEN-TION STUDY IN A PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SETTING JOHN KONG JIAN PEI

Purpose – Malaysia experienced nearly a seven-fold increase in obesity prevalence today (NHMS, 2011). Incorporating lifestyle modification into Malaysia Primary Health Care set-ting, hold better promise to enhance weight loss at individual-level behaviour changes. Hence, this study aims to pilot test a new multi-component worksite intervention for weight loss in a primary health care setting.

Design/methodology/approach – This randomized trial involved 88 participants (43, 45; intervention, control group). The intervention group enrolled in a 12-week lifestyle program that involved modification of dietary intake by community Registered Dietitian (RDs) and increasing high-intensity interval training (HITT) (ZUMBA workout with motivational interviewing (MI) to support changes. The control group received traditional counselling and weekly aerobic exer-cise from Medical Officer and physiotherapist. The primary outcome measure was the chang-es in body weight. Secondary measures were changes in blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, fasting blood lipid, and dietary changes. Assessments were repeated at 3-month interval.

Findings – There was a significant reduction in body weight, waist circumference within groups (Control, -0.85±2.08 kg, 1.1%; -0.69 ±1.99 cm, 0.8%; intervention -4.73±3.80 kg, 6.8%; -7.60±5.48 cm, 8.4%). Intervention group demonstrated significant improvement (P< 0.01) in all cardiometablic risk factors. 

Conclusion - This study showed that primary health care setting can be successful locations in promoting short term health benefits. RDs were more successful and HITT, ZUMBA appeared to be favourable workout with MI in achieving drastic weight loss.
