Background
Malnutrition is still become a significant problem in hospitalized patients, thus nutrition care process should be performed in all patients. Standardized Nutrition Care Process (SNCP) with four steps (assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation) is conducted to patients at risk malnutrition, yet there isn’t any clear protocols for nutritional intervention.
Objective
To identify the impact of the implementation of Nutrition Care Process Algorithm (NCPA) on patiens nutrition intake, nutritional status and length of stay (LOS).
Methods
Randomized controlled trial was performed on 115 adult surgical patients in Sardjito Hospital. Samples were divided into two groups, first group was treated with NCPA and the other group with SNCP. The nutritional intervention in NCPA group consist of nutrition counseling, dietary modification and health care team collaboration. Dietary intake, mid upper arm circumference (MUAC), serum albumin and LOS data were monitored.
Result
Either Standardized nutrition care process or NCPA algorithm can increased of energy and protein intake (422 kcal vs 544 kcal and 21 g vs 18.8 g). NCPA can increase MUAC 0,028 cm, but decreased of albumin levels 0.14 g/dL and 0.01 g/dL respectively. LOS is similar in both group (14.16 days vs 14.03days). There were no significant differences between dietary intake, nutritional status and LOS in both groups.
Conclusion
Implementation of NCPA had a higher energy and also increased MUAC. However, NCPA implementation showed similiar outcomes with SNCP which has already applied in the hospital.
