#58 - Effectiveness of Ulam Raja (Cosmos Caudatus) in the Management of Glucose-Related Parameters: A Systematic Review From Animal and Human Studies Nur Maziah Hanum Osman

Cosmos caudatus (C. caudatus) or known locally as Ulam Raja is a medicinal plant grown locally in Malaysia. The plant is originated from tropical Central America and belongs to the Asteraceae family. C. caudatus are believed to have glucose-lowering effects. While it has been commonly used by the public, a relatively little is known about the effectiveness of C.caudatus on glucose-related parameters. This presentation aims to systematically review the effectiveness of C. caudatus on glucose-related parameters in animal and human models. A literature review was conducted using multiple databases with no time restriction using MeSH Terms “Cosmos Caudatus” OR “Ulam Raja” AND “Human Trial” OR “Animal Study”" AND “Insulin” OR “Blood Glucose”. Eighteen studies were retrieved and only four were systematically reviewed based on a priori criteria. In this four studies, three from the animal studies and one retrieved from a human study. In animal studies, C. caudatus was found to be beneficial in reducing blood glucose level and improving insulin sensitivity. In a human study, consumption of cc for 8 weeks improved insulin sensitivity and resistance. However, no significant different were observed for overall glycemic control and fasting blood glucose. Overall, this finding shows the benefits of C. caudatus in improving glucose-related parameter in animal studies. Nevertheless, the outcome in a human study was still controversial which require further investigation.
