Dept of Dietetics & Food Services, Hospital Melaka.

Introduction: Pregnancy in women with diabetes is associated with increased risk of obstetric and neonatal complications, morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the maternal and neonatal outcome of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by looking into maternal age and parity with maternal outcome and maternal complications, blood sugar control with neonatal complications as well as blood sugar level with neonatal weight.
Methodology: The study design was retrospective cohort. Sample size was (n=120). Data of antenatal and postnatal from patient’s medical records were extracted from 1 Jan 2014 till 30 June 2014. All GDM patients (diet control or with insulin therapy) were selected meanwhile patients whom were existing diabetes were excluded with pre-existing past medical history.
Results: There is no association between maternal age with maternal outcome as well as parity with maternal complications (p=0.358) and (p=0.673). There is an association between blood sugar control with neonatal complications (p=0.000,   =26.897) but no association between blood sugar level and neonatal weight (p=0.742)
Conclusions: Suboptimal blood sugar control of mothers with GDM having more likely in developing neonatal complications upon delivery.
