#114 - ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THIRST, XEROSTOMIA, THIRST INTENSITY WITH INTERDIALYTIC WEIGHT GAIN (IDWG) AMONG HAEMODIALYSIS (HD) PATIENTS IN KLANG VALLEY, MALAYSIA Ng Poh Mun

BACKGROUND: Noncompliance with fluid restriction is a common problem among haemodialysis (HD) patients which will cause a large interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) which leads to chronic fluid overload. Severe t hirst and xerostomia are factors which can induce non-compliance to a fluid restricted diet. This study aims to determine the association between thirst, xerostomia and thirst intensity with IDWG among HD patients in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

METHODOLOGY: 107 HD subjects were recruited for the study. Socio-demographic profile was assessed by verbal cum written questionnaire. Medical information, clinical characteristics and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) were obtained from medical records. Thirst and thirst intensity were assessed using Dialysis Thirst Inventory (DTI) and 100mm-visual analogue scale (VAS) respectively. Xerostomia was assessed using Xerostomia Inventory (XI).

RESULTS: Result showed that there was no significant association between socio-demographic and clinical characteristics with fluid overload (p > 0.05). Positive correlations were found among XI, DTI and VAS thirst score (p < 0.01). IDWG was positively correlated with DTI (ρ = 0.205, p = 0.034). Thirst score in the age group ≤ 64 years old was significantly higher than the > 65 years old age group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION: In HD subjects, thirst is associated with IDWG. It is also concluded that xerostomia, thirst and thirst intensity were positively correlated.
