BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is projected as the seventh worldwide burden of disease in 2030. The burden of the COPD can be assessed using Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) which could help in managing COPD, whether in primary or secondary health care. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine factors that associated with HRQOL among COPD patients.
METHODOLOGY: A series of literature searches (n=20) was conducted on the published journals from 2005 until 2017. The following keywords were used: factors correlated/influence/related, HRQOL, COPD.
RESULTS: The review found that Body Mass Index (BMI), severity of COPD, comorbidities, functional status, depression and anxiety, dyspnea, sleep quality, exacerbation and socio-demographic (age, gender, education level, smoking history) had positive correlation with HRQOL. Most studies focused on adult population which did not specific to elderly population whereas the majority of the COPD patients are prone among elderly patients. Besides that, many studies used less sensitive and out-dated instrument. The review also found very few published journal on dietary intake and nutritional status.
CONCLUSION: There is a need for further studies to explore factors that associated with HRQOL among COPD especially among elderly population in clinical setting which is more vulnerable to be malnourished and at highest risk of morbidity and mortality so that early intervention can be made for this population.
