Introduction: This review provides an investigation into the food choice decisions made by elderly. Food choice values defined as factors that individuals consider when deciding which foods to purchase and/or consume. Elderly will experience more influences and life course events that will impact their food choices. Ageing processes results in physiological, pathological, psychosocial and environmental changes that may adversely impact food choice and dietary intake.

Methods: A scoping review using 13 electronic journal databases, published reports and other types of publication in 2007-2017 was conducted. Key words of food choice or elderly were used in the searches and followed by a suggested framework of food choice.

Results: Findings revealed that both the distal (e.g., genetics, geography, culture, etc.) and proximal (e.g., taste preferences, knowledge, beliefs, availability, etc.) factors may affect food choices among elderly. Relatively few data regarding elderly food choices lead to the need of more holistic approach to comprehend food choice behavior.

Conclusion: Food choice among elderly is affected by a combination of factors. An increasing number of elderly in Malaysia and the occurrence of morbidities, there is a need to investigate the different factors that have an effect on choice of food our seniors make, and to investigate hemodialysis treatment as a modifier to the outcomes.
