ABSTRACT 

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted during Ramadan month and aimed to assess the implementation of Food Hygiene Regulation 2009 in term of wearing complete and proper attire, attending food handlers training, having Typhoid injection and handling the foods in clean and safe ways among registered and non-registered food handlers with Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan at Ramadan bazaar in Kuantan.
METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted using observation and interview methods. The respondents (N= 257) include food handlers at 92 stalls of Ramadan bazaar in Kuantan. A set of questionnaire was used which consist of four parts; part A, Socio-demographic data, part B, the observation of food handlers’ attire, part C, the attendance of food handlers training and having Typhoid injection and part D, ways of handling foods either clean or not.
RESULTS: The association between types of food handlers (either registered or non-registered) was significance to the status of wearing complete and proper attire (p <0.001) which 92.2% of registered food handlers wore complete and proper attire as compared to non-registered food handlers (7.8%), status of attending food handlers training program and having Typhoid injection (p< 0.001) which 82.5% registered foods handlers were attended training and having Typhoid injection as compared to non-registered food handlers (17.5%), and the status of handling foods in clean and safe ways (p< 0.001) which 71.2% of registered food handlers handled foods in clean and safe ways as compared to non-registered food handlers (28.8%).
CONCLUSION: Registered food handlers were more committed to implement the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 as compared to non-registered food handlers.
